St. Croix #1 June 10, 2011 Turtle Nesting
Last night the students did something 99.9% of people have never done; they witnessed the giant leatherback turtle laying eggs and almost simultaneously they witnessed a nest hatching. Each student had the opportunity to pick up a tiny hatchling and guide it to the ocean! It was the best science field study one could imagine. Tonight they will work with students from the University of California La Jolla and measure the nesting turtles and gather the data. Everyone is tired but excited (nesting turtles come on the beach late at night).
